A Letter from amy griffin:

OL Reign Academy strives to inform the players and families in the club with as much information as we can provide that we feel will help support the player and her/their support system as best we can. With the growth of the academy over the last few years, we believe there is an even greater need to share info surrounding the club to enlighten, unify, and connect our OL Reign Academy ecosystem. I am ecstatic to be able to kick off our first Academy newsletter on the homestretch of 2023 allowing a place to share info relating to the players, coaches, teams, and academy.

In addition to many remarkably beautiful Fall days, there were some soggy frigid days as well. OL Reign Academy enjoyed time on the field with our younger teams, specifically on Technical Tuesdays. While our older teams were going toe-to-toe on their respective high school teams, the younger players spent time dialing in technical details with a tactical application during the week while competing in league matches on the weekends. According to Technical Director Nicci Wright, “Even though the weather was imperfect, the players and staff genuinely enjoyed the time on the field together. Being able to connect with every individual and watching their work ethic made the evenings special.”

It is easy to see ideas and concepts beginning to take place with the work on the field and may not be as apparent what is occurring outside of training and playing.

  • For STAFF: In September, all staff met with Rhonda Banchero, who provided us an opportunity to learn, listen, and discuss issues surrounding diversity, equity, inclusion, and bias. Rhonda’s honest perspective and experience in the youth landscape was beneficial in our staff gaining perspective on continuing to provide a safe and healthy environment for all.

  • For HIGH SCHOOL AGE PLAYERS: Staff members Nicci Wright, Stephanie Verdoia, & Bree Rowe-Borth, led a meeting for high school players in navigating the college recruiting process for upcoming winter showcases.

  • For PARENTS/PLAYERS: Open Office Hours occurred November 20th: Nicci Wright provided the framework behind OL Reign Academy process in developing players.  At the very basic level, Principles of Play are similar through all ages and stages.  Training sessions match the principles. The matches are part of the training process to work on the principles of play that were covered over the past week(s) of training. Details are added as the level and age of the players increases.  We are an academy that has a consistent club model across all teams. This consistency provides a foundation, which allows coaches and players to focus on the needs of the individual with fewer changing variables, which we believe fosters learning.

I am excited about the direction the academy is moving, mainly because of the people that are moving right along with me. Thank you for your trust in the club while working together with us all as we dig into the process of developing players in an atmosphere everyone can appreciate.  Our staff hears a lot of positive feedback regarding the direction of the club. I fully believe that this is possible, realistic, and worthy because of the players and families we have the privilege of supporting. I hope the holiday season allows time to connect with family and friends and you are able to truly cherish the time together versus checking it off the list.

OL REIGN ACADEMY TEAM OF THE MONTH: 2010 ROUGE

Each month, we are highlighting a team in our ranks that has inspired us. This month, we are putting the spotlight on our 2010 Rouge squad, coached by Jocelyn Charrette.

We asked Coach Charrette to talk about her season so far. Here is what she had to say:

“Having the 2010 Rouge recognized as the club’s first Team of the Month is a special moment for the players as they have put in a lot of time for each other during the past year. What stands out with 2010 Rouge is that they hold themselves to the club’s core values: respect, energy, integrity, growth mindset, and the never-ending learning process from themselves and each other. The players greet each other before trainings, they are competitive with each other during trainings, but will be the first to help a teammate back up if they fall, they look for opportunities to play soccer and futsal together during the winter months, they watch game film to improve their play and have bought in to their individual and team development. The team emphasis is placed on enjoying the process, putting energy into the things they can control, like their effort and attitude, and not on the outcomes.

“All of this has been influential in the team’s success in Washington Premier League’s Super League 1. Each player brings something special to the team in their own way. They are incredible young players and human beings with a wide range of passions that all contribute to the team culture.”

2010 Rouge has set the example of what it means to break expectations. They have grinded their way to the top of the table in the WPL and have qualified for the NPL National Tournament in Denver, Colorado this July. They are the first Rouge team in Academy history to qualify for Nationals, and only the second team overall in our history to make it this far.

Way to make us proud, 2010 Rouge!
